Resource Association founding Chair steps down

The Resource Association, a trade association for the reprocessing and recycling industries and their supply chain, has marked the retirement of its founding Chairman, Andy Doran, with a Tour de France themed presentation to thank him for his four years of service.

Doran (pictured above, centre), who is Senior Manager for Sustainability & Recycling Development at aluminium processing company Novelis Europe, stepped down from his role as Chairman at the association’s recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), but will continue to work with the association as a Non-Executive Director.

His work as Chairman was celebrated at an event on Friday (4 July) at the Resource Association offices in Otley, Yorkshire. A keen cyclist, Doran was presented with a special road cycling shirt with the slogan ‘Andy Doran – Tour de Force’ (pictured above).

Doran commented: “I am gratified at the generosity and ingenuity of my colleagues in the Resource Association and would not only like to thank them for the fabulous gift but the tremendous support they have given me and continue to give to Ray Georgeson [Chief Executive of the Resource Association] and the team. I’m very much still on board as a member of the Board, but promise not to wear the shirt at Board meetings!”

Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland (pictured above, right), who presented Doran with the shirt, said: “As Otley’s MP I can tell you how proud we are to host the headquarters of the Association and I continue to support your valuable work building a stronger resource industry that can only bring economic and environmental benefits to our nation. Since supporting the launch of the Association in 2011 I’ve watched your development with great interest and congratulate Andy on his fine leadership of your Board.”

Jonathan Short (pictured above, left), Founder and Deputy Chairman of plastics recycling firm ECO Plastics has been elected as the new chairman of the Resource Association. Speaking after the event, Short said: “Andy’s ‘grand départ’ as Chairman has been magnificently emulated by Le Tour de Yorkshire itself this weekend. The event provided a fitting backdrop to Andy’s wise Chairmanship of the organisation and a great opportunity to thank him properly for his efforts. I have big shoes to fill but am very much relishing the opportunity of carrying on his sterling efforts for the association.”

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
