Plastics Recycling Show gets new date and venue
Edward Perchard | 10 December 2015

The Plastics Recycling Show (PRS) Europe has been rescheduled for March after last month’s heightened threat level in Brussels forced organisers to postpone the event.

Event organisers Crain Communications have now announced that the PRS will take place on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 March 2016 at a new, bigger venue, Brussels Expo.

The free-to-attend PRS will feature an exhibition and conference designed for plastics recycling organisations from across Europe. As was originally planned, the event will also be co-located with the Working Groups sessions of Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), which will also be open to the public.

More than 65 companies and organisations are due to showcase the latest advances in European plastics recycling at the exhibition, while the conference will examine a range of industry themes including the economics of plastics recycling, the regulatory background, materials, processing, technology and innovation.

The two-day conference was originally scheduled to take place at the Tour & Taxis venue in Brussels on 25-26 November, but had to be postponed after the Belgian government raised the threat alert in the region to level four – ‘serious and immediate threat’ – following investigations into the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.

Circular Economy Package ‘adds to event’

Steve Crowhurst, Managing Director of event organisers Crain Communications commented: “We have moved as quickly as possible to reschedule the event and very much appreciate the support we are receiving from our partners, speakers, exhibitors and visitors.”

Tom Emans, PRE President, added: “The release of the EU circular economy package makes it a must to attend such an event in Brussels in order to showcase the real potential of plastics recycling in Europe. The Plastics Recycling Show Europe initiative will become a reference in our business and I would like to invite all interested parties with an interest in developing our markets to attend the event in March 2016”.

More information on the Plastics Recycling Show Europe, including updates to the show’s programme, can be found at the event’s website.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
