WEIRD AND WONDERFUL

For most of us, recycling should be a familiar idea by now, but it seems that some people in Warwickshire still haven’t quite grasped the concept and are sending all manner of strange items to their local recycling centres.

The county council decided to compile a list of the strangest things it’s found after staff in the Nuneaton recycling centre found a hand grenade in one of their skips. It’s not the first illegal item they’ve found either, having once discovering live ammunition, and on another occasion several cannabis plants recycled in green waste.

On two occasions the recycling centre staff found animals: both a duck and a kitten have been found and successfully rescued.

Some of the other items were rather more... personal. They included a pair of inflatable dolls, a set of risqué amateur photographs and a suitcase full of ‘marital aids’.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
