Bag of tricks

The prototype Scrubba Wash Bag attempts to solve the age-old problem of packing for your holiday. Take too many clothes and lug a huge suitcase around, or pack too few and spend the last few days in less-than-hygienic attire. Not only can this portable washing machine keep your clothes fresh, but it does so with zero electricity and far less water than your normal household appliance.

According to its makers, all you have to do is put a few tee-shirts into the sealable bag alongside a little detergent and two to four litres of water, rub your clothes against the flexible washboard inside for 30 seconds and you’re done.

Considering that most washing machines use around 60 litres of water and 1.2 kilowatt hours of electricity per load, substituting that for a little elbow grease doesn’t seem like such a bad trade-off.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

User Avatar

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
