This years Chartered Institution of Waste Management (CIWM) conference organised in partnership with the Environmental Services Association (ESA) will be held at The Royal College of Surgeons of England in London on the 12th and 13th of June. The conference will host speakers from the public and private sectors to talk about the issues facing the waste industry today and its future role in a green economy.

“Working in partnership and building on the highly successful first joint conference last year, CIWM and ESA have designed this year’s conference programme to address both the current issues that are shaping our industry and the longer term questions about the direction of travel and the role of our industry in tackling big ticket items including energy and resource security and low carbon growth”, says CIWM chief executive Steve Lee.

This first day of talks will focus on the future of the waste industry. After the opening address by CIWM President Derek Greedy, the conference will begin in earnest with a debate on the role of the waste industry in creating a resource-secure, sustainable economy. The panel will include Deputy Director-General for the European Commission, Alan Seatter (pictured above) and Dimitri Zenghelis who headed up the Stern Review team in 2007/08 and is now Chief Economist at the Cisco Climate Change Practice.

Events on the 12th June will also include a keynote speech by Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defra, Lord Taylor of Holbeach, a discussion on materials recovery and the upcoming judicial review on single-stream waste collection and a talk on the UK’s zero waste aspirations.

Day two will address the challenges facing the industry today. Morning sessions will discuss the different approaches to changing people’s attitudes to household and business waste. There will also be an update on the revised National Planning Policy Framework, after which, local government minister Bob Neill MP will be giving the keynote speech. The conference ends with a session on the waste industry’s role in the wider sustainability movement.

The conference will be held at the Royal College of Surgeons, 35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE. The first speaker will begin at 9.45am on Tuesday 12th June.

Tickets can still be bought at the CIWM conference website.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
