The Lux Awards 2012 will take place at London’s Natural History Museum on 6 November and nominations for the 16 awards are now open for entry.
Held for the first time last November, the Lux Awards (organized by Lux magazine and the Lighting Industry Association (LIA)) recognize and celebrate achievements in the lighting industry.
Those in the lighting industry are encouraged to nominate clients and end-users that have “used lighting in exceptional ways to improve their lit environment and reduce energy”. The awards celebrate outstanding achievement in 16 areas, including architectural lighting project of the year, retrofit project of the year and the recycling award, sponsored by specialist WEEE compliance scheme for gas discharge lamps, Recolight and producer compliance scheme, Lumicom. Winners will receive a trophy made from recycled lamp glass.
Suzanne Castine, Marketing Manager at Recolight, said: “Recolight is proud to be a supporter of the Lux Awards. We believe that it is important to recognise the efforts of businesses to be sustainable, and would encourage any business that makes a difference through recycling, has recycled large quantities of lamps or luminaires, or who offers a recycling service to its customers, to apply.”
The closing date for entries is 16th July.
Visit the Lux awards website for more information and details on how to apply.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?
There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
